Our Preschool
Shining Stars Pre-school in Malvern provides a complimentary curriculum preparing children as they approach school age,. As practitioners, we know what we would want and expect of children starting a primary school – what skills and behaviours make for a smooth transition and provide the safest guarantee of a successful start to their chosen Infant school. To accomplish this, we work closely with feeder primaries in Malvern and beyond. We provide detailed information about your child’s educational and developmental progress, we meet with their future teacher and we provide a personalised service for additional visits to the school if required as well as acting as a point of contact for the school.
Higher Order Skills
We provide experiences and opportunities that celebrate and develop a child’s confidence as well as their cognitive and physical abilities. They will be learning to read. Beginning with both the identification and pronunciation of initial letter sounds, phoneme’s and letter groups and progressing to common words. These activities continue to be carried out in the context of structured play and experiential learning.
Preparation for School
As your child reaches their fourth year, you will be making choices about their next steps in their educational journey. We work closely with local schools to assist parents in making choices and to ensuring a smooth transition from the Nursery to the school of choice. By the time your child is of school age, they will be well prepared for their next steps in their education.
The Curriculum
Reading
As our pre-schoolers develop in their confidence with letters and words they will be guided in reading key words and simple sentences. Their familiarity with phonics will enable them to begin to decode regular words and read them aloud with increasing confidence. They will use this knowledge to write words that relate to the spoken words. In turn, they will begin to write simple sentences
Mathematics
Our pre-schoolers will practice counting, placing the numbers in order and begin to double and halve quantities through sharing objects. They will experience counting forwards and backwards when adding and subtracting numbers. Our children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems.
Creative and Expressive Arts
Our pre-school children take a leading role in our public performances throughout the year. These include opportunities to speak and act in public, sing and dance and recite stories and poems. They will safely explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques in art, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function. Children will have opportunities to create both 2D and 3D objects.
